There are certain qualities that I think a massage therapist should have to do good work, however, these are my own personal views. It is extremely important to feel a connection with my clients and that is mutual. Making a positive effort to be personable is just as important as the act of giving a massage. When giving a massage, it is important not to be afraid of the body. I like to massage up to the origin and insertion of the muscles and around the joints. This gives the client a sense of completion and a better awareness of the extension of their bodies. At the same time, I try to move slowly and build up a solid foundation with the client based on a sense of trust. On a psychological level, it is just as important to connect with the client. When I give a massage, I need to feel in some way that my energy is getting through to that person. If I don't feel that, then I usually feel drained of energy after the massage. If there is a good exchange, I feel energized. This is why massage is an energetic exchange. Even when a client is silent during the whole session, often there is a subliminal transmission of energy or feeling that I can sense and then I am able to transfer the energy back to the person. Sometimes I feel as if I just sink into that person and my body is connected to theirs. The energy flows in a revolving circle from the client to the therapist and back. I always try to get into this groove when I work. Sometimes it is so good that I feel deeply relaxed, as if I am getting a massage too. Then I know it is really working. The mind and body are intricately connected and the massage experience can bring it all together. |
